More than an unforgettable, 130m abseil this is also a journey into the realm of misty folk law and legend. The beauty and magnificence of the wonderland carved out of the rock by the river are shrouded in superstition.
Local legend tells of a giant snake, Igoloma, that lives in the gorge at the bottom of Magwa Falls. This malevolent serpent lives on the meat of unfortunate animals that have plummeted over the edge onto the rocks below.
There have also been those who have given up on life and leapt off the sheer cliff into the void below. Filled with sadness, trepidation and fear, family members are left with the task of recovering the mangled, lifeless bodies of their loved ones. On occasion, they are too late; they arrive at the bottom of the falls to find only blood stained rocks and the telltale marks of the serpent... Igoloma got there before them.
The legend has it that those who recovered cattle carcasses without leaving something for the serpent never made it out. The serpent with its powers of witchcraft summoned the river to rise swiftly thereby drowning those that tried to deprive it of the meat.
So, be sure to take an offering of meat should you venture down into the gorge at Magwa Falls, lest you too be taken by Igoloma. Those who forgot have perished; some were brave enough to cut off a finger to appease the serpent.
