Motivating grade 12’s to submit an adventure tourism essay

Those who are interested are required to submit a written essay based on the broad topic of adventure tourism as they see it. The purpose of this essay is to identify those who have a genuine interest in the subject. These essays are submitted to On Track Club when the learners register for selections.

On Track Club's Township Adventure Games

This is the round of mass participation where we try and involve as many people from the township as possible. Competitors are between the age of 14 and 19, the course has massive spectator appeal and we employ a number of the locals as casual staff for the two days.
The objective of the qualifying rounds is to introduce adventure sport, with a glimpse of how it fits into tourism and how tourism impacts directly on their lives. Simultaneously we search out those youngsters that show the most enthusiasm and aptitude. This means that there is a definite element of competition and rivalry, winning teams get prizes and some make it through to the next round.
Special attention is given to the grade 12’s who have indicated that they have a definite interest in a career in adventure tourism. These grade 12’s will not be judged on their positions in competing in the races but rather on the way in which they participate – an athlete is not necessarily the best candidate; we are more interested in those who show aptitude for team work and the social skills vital for success in the tourism industry. During the first few years of implementation, with a view to providing a mature foundation of graduate instructors, we will also consider older candidates – as was the case with Pheneas Nenemba.
